Internal family systems

Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy is an evidence-based approach that helps you understand and connect with the different “parts” of yourself. Rather than seeing thoughts or emotions as problems to fix, IFS views each part, whether it shows up as anxiety, self-criticism, perfectionism, or overwhelm, as having a purpose and wanting to protect you in some way. Through this work, you can begin to build a more compassionate and curious relationship with yourself.

In IFS therapy, we gently explore these parts while also accessing your core Self, the grounded, calm, and compassionate center within you. From this place, healing can happen naturally. Protective patterns can soften, past wounds can be processed, and you can experience greater clarity, confidence, and emotional balance.

IFS describes three common types of parts that many people experience. Managers are proactive parts that try to keep you safe and in control, often showing up as perfectionism, overthinking, or people-pleasing. Firefighters are reactive parts that step in when emotions feel overwhelming, using strategies like numbing, distraction, or impulsive behaviours to quickly reduce distress. Exiles are the more vulnerable parts that carry pain from past experiences, such as feelings of shame, hurt, or fear. In IFS, we approach each of these parts with curiosity and respect, understanding that they all play important roles in your internal system.

As an IFS therapist in Calgary, I offer a non-judgmental space where you can slow down and explore your inner world at your own pace. This approach is especially helpful for trauma, anxiety, people-pleasing, and feeling stuck in patterns that no longer serve you. If you’re searching for an IFS therapist or psychologist in Calgary, this approach can support deep, lasting change by helping you reconnect with who you are underneath your protective patterns.
